Proctor & Gamble subsidiary New Chapter wanted to adopt a comprehensive sustainability strategy. Nancy led the strategy development, including a materiality assessment, sustainability positioning, strategy pillars, pillar objectives, goals, milestones, and KPIs (engaged by public health and safety organization NSF International).

The USRSB wanted to develop industry-wide goals and sector-specific targets related to the six high priority indicators in the U.S. Beef Industry Sustainability Framework. Nancy served as project lead and manager -- facilitating discussions among USRSB leadership, member workshops, collaboration with scientific experts and NGO partners, and drafting a report on all of the work completed during Phase 1 of the goals and targets development process (engaged by public health and safety organization NSF International).

The US-RSPE wanted to create an adaptable platform for all constituents in the poultry and egg value chain to voluntarily verify they are environmentally sound, socially responsible, and economically viable. Nancy supported the Framework Committee to create this new sustainability framework for the poultry (broiler and turkey) and egg industries (engaged by strategic consultancy The Context Network).

Conagra needed help preparing its 2018 Citizenship Report in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards. Nancy drafted the 2018 report and conformed it to the GRI Standards. In subsequent engagements, Nancy advised Conagra on its 2020 Citizenship Report, developing its first-ever SASB disclosures (2020), and enhancing its ESG rating by MSCI.

Corteva wanted help developing a new sustainability strategy and strategic plan in line with stakeholder expectations and best practices, and wants ongoing support with communications, stakeholder engagement, sustainability governance, and planning for sustainability reporting. Nancy is serving as sustainability expert to assist with all of these efforts (engaged by PR firm Bader Rutter and subsequently by strategic consultancy The Context Network).

Humana had published previous sustainability reports in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)'s G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines and wanted to publish its 2014 - 2015 sustainability report in accordance with the new G4 Guidelines. Nancy served as GRI expert and report writer, to support the materiality assessment and all of the writing of Humana's sustainability report (engaged by PR firm Golin).

The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) sought to launch an updated Cattlemen's Stewardship Review, and needed to identify its key stakeholders and have a communications plan for rolling out the new report to those stakeholders. Nancy served as CSR expert and Managing Account Supervisor on the project (engaged by PR firm Ketchum).

Omega-3 producer Qualitas Health needed to update its sustainability-related messages and develop a marketing and engagement plan that would include and amplify new messages. Nancy updated the company's messages, and wrote a white paper on the sustainability impacts of producing the company's Almega PL product.

Bernstein analysts covering U.S. food and U.S. foodservice were being asked difficult questions on sustainability and interested in learning how sustsainability impacted corporate valuations. Nancy developed a program to educate analysts, investors, and companies on the importance of sustainability, the myriad of sustainability rankings, and reporting issues.

Very few restaurants in the U.S. were certified under existing green restaurant standards, so the University of Chicago set up the Green Restaurant Research Team (GRRT) to consider ways to improve existing standards and tailor them specifically for Chicago restaurants. As Assistant Director of the GRRT, Nancy helped guide undergraduate and graduate students to recommend new standards.

Williams-Sonoma had not focused on sustainability, causing it to miss opportunities to enhance its brand and risk critique from activists, customers, investors and employees. Nancy worked at a grass-roots level to develop and launch a program to "help the business by helping the environment." Successes included composting at corporate; "green" specifications for store builds; eco-related collaborations with other retailers; and packaging reductions, paving the way for broad, public commitments.

As Vice Chair of the Natural Resources Commission of the City of Highland Park, IL, Nancy helped to establish strategies for implementing the city's sustainability plan, developed award-winning schools programs, and led initiatives for regulating polystyrene food ware and plastic carry-out bags.
